The Sadako Renewal Project began as Japanese American, Peace Activist, Quaker, Buddhist, and neighborhood community members came together in response to the theft of the statue in July 2024.  
The project is currently led by  board of directors Stanley Shikuma, Jonathan Betz-Zall, Linda Ando, and Tara Tamaribuchi, and with contracted public art management from Elisheba Johnson and Marcia Iwasaki, and contracted public art services from Saya Moriyasu
